Cletis "Clete" Boyer was born in the small town of Cossville, Missouri on February 8th, 1937.
Clete went to Alba High School and played baseball and basketball and made All State for 2 years in basketball.
In 1955, after High School, Clete was signed by the K.C. Athletics and later traded to the NY Yankees, where Clete played shortstop for Binghamton.
In 1958, Clete went to Richmond where he also played shortstop. Then, in 1959, Clete made his Yankee debut at 3rd Base.
In 1960, the Yankees won the American League Pennant. Clete was on his way to his first World Series.
The Yankees won the division five years in a row, with two World Series Championships, 1961-1962.
The ultimate time for Clete and his family was in 1964. This year, 3rd base was covered by a Boyer on each team in the Series, Kenny for the Cardinals and Clete for the Yankees.
Clete often wonders how his parents felt, to see their two sons on opposite teams in the Ultimate Baseball Game.
Clete and Kenny hit home runs in their last World Series Game, a first in Major-League history.
In 1967-1971, Clete played for the Atlanta Braves. 1967 was one of Clete's best defensive years. Clete hit 26 Home Runs, 96 RBI's and led the National League 3rd Basemen in fielding in 1967 and 1969.
1969, the year Clete won his Gold Glove - August 1969, Clete was in a slump, 1 for 17, until the beautiful girl comes running across the field to kiss him. Morganna earned notoriety by dashing on the field and kissing ball players. After the kiss, Clete got an RBI single, two more hits followed. The kiss worked - Clete got 8 more hits in the next 15 at bats. 1969, Atlanta won the National League Western Division Championship.
1972-1975, Clete played for the Taiyo Whales in Japan, where he won two Gold Gloves and hit 14 to 20 homers a year.
1976-1977, Clete was back in Atlanta and for the next three years was Roving Infield Coach.
In the early 1980's, Clete received a call from Billy Martin. He wanted Clete to come to Oakland, where for the next six years he worked for Oakland, coaching.
After Clete's tenure at Oakland, he went back to the Yankees with the help of Billy Martin as Infield Instructor for the Yankees, which later led to coaching 3rd base until 1993.
1994, Clete needed surgery on his knee.
In 1995, Clete started as Infield Instructor for the NY Yankees. That is where Clete first met Derek Jeter. Clete worked with Jeter to get him ready for the big league. In 1996, Jeter was rookie of the year.
After the 1996 season, it was time for Clete to retire from baseball. Clete started a Memorabilia business and Frame Shop.
Sadly, Clete Boyer, 70, passed away June 4, 2007. Clete will be remembered fondly by us all. May God Bless you, Clete.
